                                                     What is spinal cord injury?
The spinal cord injury is a temporary or permanent change in the cord's motor, sensory, or autonomic function. Common causes of damage are trauma (car accident, gunshot, falls, sports injuries, etc.) or disease (transverse myelitis, polio, spina-bifida, etc). Treatment of spinal cord injuries starts with relaxing the spine and controlling inflammation to prevent damage region. A radiographic evaluation using an X-RAY, MRI or CT scan may determine if there is any damage and where it is located. Physiotherapy, rehabilitation is very much need, especially if the patient’s injury interferes with activities of daily life.
What are the treatments?
Physiotherapy as a Non-surgical method of treatment is usually attempted first, leaving surgery as last stages. Pain medications are often prescribed as the first attempt to alleviate the acute pain and allow the patient to begin mobilization. Diet and exercise are crucial to improving back pain in overweight patients. A Therapist will tell a patient how to properly lift, dress, walk, and perform other activities. Ice and heat application can be domestically helpful in relieving the painful symptoms of a disc herniation. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications are commonly prescribed, and often help relieve the pain associated with a disc herniation and NSAIDs should be used under doctor's supervision. [#siliguri #WestBengal ]
